Bicyclist airlifted after collision with car

A bicyclist was injured after colliding with a car at the intersection of Highway 15-501 and Pinehurst Avenue in Southern Pines shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Upon arriving at the scene, Southern Pines Fire and Rescue found a man lying on the road next to his bike, according to radio communication. They blocked off the intersection and administered aid to the man.

Firefighters set up a landing zone for a medevac helicopter at Memorial Park on Morganton Road. Moore County EMS transported the man to the landing zone where he was flown to a nearby trauma center.

According to Southern Pines Deputy Fire Chief Ted Horvath, the conscious man was in “serious but stable condition when he departed on the helicopter.”

The driver of the vehicle involved was not injured.

Southern Pines Police Department is investigating the wreck.
