On Tuesday, February 5, the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange, 15 Azalea Road, will reopen at 10 a.m. for their spring season every Tuesday through Saturday. 2019 marks the beginning of the cabin’s 97th year as an Exchange, only one of 20 remaining in the U.S.
With February always noted as ‘Heart Healthy Month’, the SWE February Lunch & Learn fundraiser will be held on Thursday, February 21, at 10:30 a.m. Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at First Health, Jean Barrett Loflin, will be the guest speaker. Participants are invited to bring their questions and concerns for Loflin.
The cabin’s chef, Katrina Talyor, will be preparing a heart healthy lunch and dessert. Reservations may be made for the $25 event beginning on February 1 by calling the Exchange at 295-4677.
New refurbishing inside the log cabin includes an entire new electrical system and Mitsubishi split-packs to heat and cool the entire cabin. A $16,000 grant from the Marion Stedman Covington Foundation made these upgrades possible. Mrs. Covington’s lifelong passion was North Carolina historic preservation.
Vice-President Kathleen Causey and others had worked with the foundation for 18 months to secure these funds due to the cabin’s dire need for repairs and upgrades. The Board has approved the treatment of log replacement, chinking and pest treatment by local expert Matt Youngerman. With drier weather conditions, this important work will be done to prevent any further deterioration.
With recent donations, the Board made the decision to move forward with upgrading the ancient HVAC system at the same time the electrical work was done in January to save on installation costs. The Board is extremely thankful for the donations and Wayne Haddock of Pinehurst Homes who has greatly reduced their costs to help save our historical 1810 cabin for future generations. Members and the public are gratefully asked to consider donating to this HVAC fund through the website – www.sandhillswe.org
The Board members for the SWE non-profit include Co-presidents Barb Summers and Marie Carbrey, Kathleen Causey, Anne Wright, Alice Robbins, Char Rohr, Kim Tills, Judie Wiggins, Beverly Raffaele, Dee Anderson, Elizabeth Toomey, Bev Reynolds and Pat Welch. Advisors to the board include: Cav Peterson, Ron Rhody, Joyce Reehling, Leslie Habets, Amanda Jakl, Audrey Moriarty, Carole Southon, John Strickland and Laurie Bogart Wiles.
