A Carthage apartment building was saved from fire Tuesday morning.
A fire in an apartment unit at 6 Courthouse Square broke out just after midnight. When firefighters arrived, most of the fire had been extinguished by the occupant of the studio apartment.
“The resident was awakened by a smoke detector and saw the fire and began pouring pots of water on the fire. He did a good job, and it was a good job of containment from everyone,” said Carthage Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Jason Love.
Carthage Fire and Rescue extinguished the rest of the fire and checked for hot spots in the ceiling. The fire was contained in the backdoor area of the apartment. You can see char marks going up the side of the building and a burned exterior door.
No one was injured during the fire, and Red Cross came to assist the man.
Also assisting with the scene were Carthage Police, Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, Eastwood Fire and Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire and Rescue, Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, and Moore County EMS.
“It was definitely scary; I was woken up to the firetruck lights and the smell,” said resident Mason Williams. “We watched the firefighters do their job and stayed outside until it was safe to re-enter.”
All other apartments remained undamaged.
