You don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to whip up delicious eats. Learn how to make sauces that will rival your grandma’s, discover plant-based cooking, or save yourself time and learn how to get three meals out of one rotisserie chicken. There will be eight evening Sandhills Community College Creative Living fall culinary classes in September.
“Knife Skills” will teach you how to reduce knife accidents by learning sharpening and cutting techniques you can practice and use every day. Chicken wings and legs will be baked in class by students after learning how to properly break down a whole chicken. Held on Monday, Sept. 19 from 6-8 p.m., this class will cost $75.
In “Pasta Making” students are going to mix and cut homemade pasta, learn the different types of pasta and how you can use them in cooking to make your meals amazing and well rounded. Butter noodles in white wine cream sauce to be prepared in class. Held on Monday, Sept. 26 from 6-8 p.m., this class will cost $75.
In “African Cuisine,” students will explore the trending African cuisine, hoping to find some new flavors and dishes that can surprise guests right from home. Kuku paka or plasas to be prepared in class. Held on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m., this class will cost $75.
“Let’s Get Saucy” is all about sauces. The mother sauces will be created in class, and you will also dive into the derivatives of these sauces. How and when to use what sauce and what flavors enhance our flavors. Small bites to taste chicken, beef, and broccoli sauces. Held on Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 6-8 p.m., this class will cost $75.
In “3 Meals from 1 Rotisserie Chicken” students will learn how to meal prep for the week by making three different meals including chicken stock from a picked-over carcass. You will make a quick chicken pizza, chicken tortilla soup and chicken avocado salad for a delicious lunch. Held on Friday, Sept. 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., this class will cost $75.
In “Detroit Pizza Making” students will have the chance to make and sample this latest trend. This hands-on experience will teach students the history of the dish and how to make all components of the pizza from its fluffy and crispy crust to the cheesy mouthwatering top. You’ll leave with your pizza cravings quenched and take-home recipes to try. Held on Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., this class will cost $75.
In “Plant-Based Cooking” students will take a dive into plant-based proteins that can fulfill your hunger and help balance your nutrition. Plant-based cooking can be a very healthy alternative to most diets. Let’s explore how you can make it tasty and balanced. Eggplant Parmesan, Stuffed Peppers, or seasonal plant-based entrée to be prepared in class. Held on Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 6-8 p.m., this class will cost $75.
In “Hand Pies/Empanadas” students will learn how to make these little bites of goodness. You will make a savory empanada with ground beef, vegetables and cheese filling. Then you’ll make sweet and simple apple hand pie. No matter what you call them, they are handfuls of deliciousness. Held on Monday, Sept. 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., this class will cost $75.

Seats are still available for these classes, and they do not require an application. To register, call Continuing Education at (910) 695-3980 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m.-Noon on Fridays. All major credit cards are accepted. Fall Semester
Continuing Education classes begin throughout the semester. New and returning students do not need to apply to the College, simply register for class.
An eight-week session of fall semester curriculum classes begins on October 12. Offered online and in hybrid class formats, classes take only eight weeks to complete and award full credits. For all information, go to www.sandhills.edu/eight.
New students taking curriculum/college credit classes must apply before registering. Sandhills has an open-door policy which means all applicants are accepted. On www.sandhills.edu, new students can find the application at the top right. Returning or current students can register by using Self-Service located on MySCC.
There will be an after-school Boys and Girls Club program at Sandhills from 2:30-6:30 p.m. for kindergarten through 5th grade, ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC classes. Homework and dinner will be included. The cost is $40 per child per year. In addition, there will also be a two-week pilot effort beginning on August 15 for a drop-in Club from 6-9 pm for children of parents/guardians taking evening classes at SCC. Dinner will be provided for the children. If the pilot proves successful, the partnership will be expanded into a fall program aligned with several SCC course offerings. CCP Classes for High School Students
Local high school students can take classes at SCC when a junior and senior. Those successfully completing the required number of CCP credits qualify for the Sandhills Promise.
