Driver in serious condition after Carthage accident

A driver is in serious condition after being involved in a car accident in Carthage Friday.

The accident occurred in the 600 block of Dowd Street shortly after 8 p.m.

The driver was the only occupant in the single-vehicle accident. Homeowners came out to assist the driver when they found him unconscious. After authorities arrived on the scene, they called for air care. 

Carthage Fire Chief Tyner said the male driver was flown from Gilliam-McConnell Airfield to UNC trauma center. 

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Carthage Police Department.

Responding units were Carthage Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, Carthage Police Department and UNC Air Care.
