Driver slams into guardrail on Hwy 1

A driver slammed into a guardrail Monday evening in Southern Pines. The two-vehicle accident occurred on U.S. Highway 1 just south of Hyland Hills shortly after 9 p.m.

The driver of GMC Yukon was heading south on U.S. 1 when he crossed the centerline and sideswiped another car.

Moments later, he went off the left hand side of the road and slammed into the guardrail. The impact ripped away more than 20 feet of the guardrail and left the SUV in the roadway with heavy front-end damage.

The driver of the sedan was able to gain control of her car after impact and stopped her car just down the highway from the accident. Neither driver was transported by EMS.

N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and said the driver is facing charges in the crash.

U.S. Highway 1 southbound was completely shut down for an extended period of time due to the accident.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Cypress Point Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
