A large excavator came off a trailer and hit a car in Pinehurst Friday evening.
The excavator was being hauled on a flatbed trailer. When the driver of the trailer went through the underpass on Highway 5, the top of the excavator hit the bridge. The impact caused the excavator to come off the trailer and struck a car coming in the opposite direction toward the underpass. No injuries were reported.
A Honda SUV suffered significant damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle. A wrecker was required to remove the damaged Honda from the scene.
Due to the impact with the railroad bridge, railroad officials were contacted to confirm the bridge was safe.
The truck and trailer were able to be driven from the scene. The excavator was driven off the road onto the shoulder. It remained on the scene and will be picked up Saturday.
The area of Highway 5 at the underpass was shut down for an extended period of time. Traffic was delayed and backed up in all directions as vehicles were rerouted around the area of the accident.
Pinehurst Police are investigating the accident.
Responding to the scene were Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Pinehurst Police Department.
