FirstHealth Rock Steady Boxing Coach recognized as top three finalist

When it comes to coaching, Randy Ballard is already a champion in the eyes of his fighters. Now his dedication has been recognized on the world stage.

Ballard was recently named one of the top three finalists for the Rock Steady Boxing Coach of the Year award, an honor that highlights his extraordinary commitment to helping people with Parkinson’s disease live stronger, more confident lives.

The Coach of the Year award celebrates coaches who embody the mission of Rock Steady Boxing—empowering people with Parkinson’s to fight back through a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness program.

Ballard’s nomination drew heartfelt testimonials from fighters and their families, many of whom describe him as “their number one coach.”

“Randy gives people with Parkinson’s a purpose and a way to connect with each other,” one nomination read. “We feel seen and alive because of Randy.”

Another fighter’s family member added: “Her quality of life has improved immensely, and her positive response is impacting others going through the same thing. Randy is an amazing person, and an equally amazing coach.”

For Ballard, the recognition is deeply personal.

“Mark Twain once said the two most important days are the day you were born and the day you find out why. Rock Steady Boxing is my why.” Ballard said.

“I’ve trained a lot of fighters and coached kickboxers to fight at all levels, but never knew what training fighters would mean to me until eight years ago when I started Rock Steady Boxing. This is the most rewarding coaching experience of my life, and it’s been a real blessing to me.”

Rock Steady Boxing is a unique program designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease. Classes combine boxing drills with strength, balance, agility and coordination training.

Research shows that exercise can slow the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms, and RSB offers both physical and emotional benefits.

Fighters gain improved mobility, enhanced strength and increased confidence—while finding camaraderie and support among peers.

FirstHealth Fitness is proud to be one of the few facilities in the region to offer Rock Steady Boxing. The program is a direct reflection of FirstHealth’s core purpose: To Care for People.

“Randy’s recognition as a top three finalist underscores the caliber of coaches we have and the unique programs we bring to our communities,” said John Caliri, administrative director of FirstHealth Fitness, in a press release.

“His dedication not only helps fighters physically but also uplifts them emotionally and socially.”

Rock Steady Boxing is offered at FirstHealth Fitness-Pinehurst located at 170 Memorial Drive. For more information, call (910) 715-1800.
