North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey presented a Heroism Award to honor a bus driver who helped save the lives of 38 children during a visit to Harnett County on Friday, Feb. 2.
Causey presented the award to Monica Tyson-Crawford during the Benhaven Elementary School’s awards ceremony.
Tyson-Crawford, a Harnett County bus driver, said she smelled smoke coming from her bus with 38 kids aboard while en route to Benhaven on Nov. 14, 2023. Without hesitation, she safely pulled over and got students off, just seconds before a fire erupted.
Tyson-Crawford is also a teacher’s assistant at Benhaven.
