The Union Pines wrestling team was defeated by the Eastern Guilford Wildcats in the North Carolina High School Athletic Associations (NCHSAA) 3A state dual teams finals that took place in Greensboro on Saturday.
The Eastern Guilford Wildcats dropped just one bout before sealing the win as they earned the NCHSAA 3A Dual Team Championship with a 36-21 win against Union Pines.
Union Pines’ Logan Mitchell earned a sudden victory win in the 132-pound match-up, but that would be the only match the Wildcats didn’t claim.
Christopher Riley, at 285 pounds, opened the match with a pinfall win in 2:16 to set the tone. Omari Figueroa at 126, also earned a pin for the Wildcats. Kolby Gryder’s 8-6 decision in the 157-pound weight class sealed the win, and he was named MVP for his performance.
The Wildcats finished the season 48-0 and gave the Vikings their only loss as Union Pines wrapped the dual-team season at 31-1.
