K-9 assists in drug bust

A Southern Pines Police Department’s K-9 assisted in a drug bust on Tuesday.

“On May 30, 2023, members of the Southern Pines Police Department’s Patrol Division conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of North Bennett Street for a Vehicle Registration violation,” said the police department in a news advisory. “During the traffic stop, a department K-9 was used to conduct a sniff around the vehicle, alerting to the presence of narcotic odor. During a search of the vehicle, 3.70 grams of cocaine was located in the vehicle.”

Dorian Baldwin, 35, of Southern Pines, and Ronald Barns, 35, of Southern Pines, are facing several charges.

Baldwin is facing charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine and maintaining a vehicle for the sale of controlled substances.

Barns is facing charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, expired vehicle registration and open container.

Baldwin and Barns appeared before a Moore County magistrate and were remanded to the Moore County Detention Center under $25,000 secured bonds pending a hearing in Moore County court on June 29. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
