"Lucky man" walks away from fishing trip crash

An early morning fishing trip almost ended before it began for a Robbins man. Despite the circumstances, he was able to walk away from a single-vehicle accident outside of Eastwood around 5 a.m. on Sunday.

The driver was the only occupant of the Ford SUV while traveling on Beulah Hill Church Road near Highway 73 toward Taylortown when he struck a downed tree and flipped his SUV.

“I came up on the tree, and I hit the brakes, but it was wet, so I slid. I was trying to avoid the larger part of the tree, so I went into the other lane and went through the tree,” the driver told Sandhills Sentinel.

After hitting the tree, the car flipped and landed on its side.

This was the second downed tree in eight hours that caused an accident. Shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, a driver hit a downed tree in the northern end of the county.

“When I fell to the passenger side, my shoulder popped out and back in. I was able to stand up and climb out the door,” said the driver.

The front windshield of the SUV was shattered, and heavy damage also occurred on the driver and passenger side. The SUV is considered a total loss from the extensive damage, but the fishing trip was not affected. Following a check by Moore County EMS at the scene, the man proceeded with his fishing trip. He joked with Sandhills Sentinel that, “I deserve to catch a 10.”

No citations were issued by the State Highway Patrol, as the driver wasn’t speeding and was not determined to be at fault.

“It could have been worse. If I would have hit it head-on and not swerved, I would have come to a dead stop,” explained the driver.

Sandhills Sentinel spoke with the driver Sunday afternoon, and he is doing well. He has a minor scratch on one of his knuckles, but he may have used all his luck by walking away from the accident. Unfortunately, he reports that the fishing trip wasn’t much of a success.
