Mail truck, SUV collide in Carthage crash

A near head-on collision sent one driver to the hospital and spilled 50 gallons of diesel fuel after a passenger vehicle reportedly struck a large mail delivery truck in Carthage on Monday. The incident happened on N.C. 15-501 near Donothan Drive.

Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue initially responded to the scene and requested support from the Carthage Fire Department due to the severity of the wreck.

According to Department Chief Mike Cameron, bystanders had already removed the driver of the passenger vehicle from the car before fire and EMS personnel arrived.

Responders initially requested a medical helicopter, but later canceled the transport after evaluation. Moore County EMS transported the passenger vehicle driver to the hospital.

The truck driver declined medical treatment at the scene.

The collision damaged the delivery truck’s fuel tank, spilling an estimated 50 gallons of diesel fuel. Moore County Public Safety coordinated with a cleanup company to ensure the proper removal of the spilled fuel.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck. Authorities reported the driver of the passenger vehicle had fallen asleep while driving.
