A man was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday morning when he was trying to wave down traffic after wrecking his car in Vass.

Shortly after 4 a.m., the victim wrecked his car on U.S. 1 bypass, just north of Highway 690, according to Frank Staples with Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue.

“A witness said that the black Volkswagen had hit the median fence heading southbound, and that the driver was in the northbound lane apparently trying to wave down traffic,” said Staples. “The witness turned around at Crains Creek Road and called 911, but by the time she got back to the wreck the white Toyota Tundra had hit the man and he was confirmed dead as soon as we got on scene.”

The driver of the white Toyota Tundra told authorities he didn’t see the driver in the road.

U.S. 1 was shut down for over four hours during the investigation.
