Moore County Schools celebrates middle school debate champions

Students from across Moore County Schools gathered at Sandhills Community College this week to demonstrate their skills in research, critical thinking, and public speaking during the district’s middle school debate competition.

The event brought together middle school students from throughout the district to present arguments and engage in structured debate before judges.

First place was awarded to West Pine Middle School students Landon Graham and Waylon Ziemba. The pair was recognized for their preparation, teamwork, and ability to present clear and well-supported arguments during the competition.

“Their preparation, teamwork, and ability to present strong, thoughtful arguments helped them rise to the top,” said Moore County Schools in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of all the students who participated and represented their schools so well today. Events like this highlight the talent, confidence, and leadership our students continue to develop across MCS.”

Often, debate programs are found to help students strengthen research skills, including evaluating complex issues and building confidence in public speaking. Participation in debate has also been linked to improved critical thinking and communication abilities that support success in both academic and professional settings.

District representatives thanked the organizers, judges, and Sandhills Community College for hosting the competition and providing an opportunity for students to showcase their skills
