Betty Sue Beaman Bobo, died December 23, 2017 at St. Joseph of the Pines after complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.
A Greensboro native, Betty attended Brenau College and graduated from the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC Greensboro). She enrolled in a WCUNC flying course in 1946 and received her private pilot license. She was the only active licensed female pilot in Greensboro at that time and the only local member of the Ninety-Nines, international organization of licensed women pilots in 1946. She would later say she thought of flying as a form of relaxation. She eventually received her commercial pilot’s license as well as instructor certification and instrument rating.
She was a long-time member of the Christian Science Church and student of Christian Science. She also loved teaching and playing bridge, gardening, cooking and in the 1970’s and 80’s, international travel.
Betty was preceded in death by parents, William Joseph Beaman, Sr. and Susie Bethel Oliver Beaman; brothers, William Joseph “Bill” Beaman, Jr. and wife, Mary Elizabeth Doggett Beaman; Oliver James “Ollie” Beaman; Bruce Edward Beaman and Allman Morehead Beaman; and spouses Thomas Hamilton Wicker, Jr. and Paul Clifford Bobo, Jr. and her niece, Laura Beaman.
She is survived by her sons, Robert Wicker (Beth) of Atlanta, GA, Bruce Wicker (Su) of Blacksburg, VA and Joseph Wicker (Debbie) of Pinehurst, NC; grandson, Andrew Wicker of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Peggy Beaman Britt of Chapel Hill, NC.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
