Charles F. Rhodes, 88, died Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

A Memorial Service will be conducted 2:00 PM Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Boles Funeral Home chapel in Southern Pines. Committal services with military honors will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Charlie, as he was known to his Army friends, was born to the late Rudolph and Glennie Rhodes in New Bern, NC. He entered the Army in 1947. In 1952, he was an original member of the 1st Army 10th Special Forces Group. He served on many missions out of Bad Tolz, Germany after being assigned to train; skiing, mountaineering, and guerilla warfare. After his 20 years of many military missions and Vietnam tour from 1966-67, he earned the Army Commendation Medal (Japan); the Bronze Star Medal (Korea); Combat Infantryman Badge; Parachute and Glider Badge; Sharpshooter Rifle (M014) and Master Parachute Badge. He retired in 1967 to Santa Barbara, CA as a Civil Engineer. In 1985 he retired to Pinehurst, NC where he loved playing golf. 

He is survived by his wife, Joan Rhodes, daughters, Yvonne Berstein and husband Jason of Boca Raton, FL, Christina Ryan of Gambrills, MD, Cherryl O’Donnell and husband, Michael of Stratham, NH; 7 grandchildren: Taylor, Fallon, Ryan and Payton of Stratham, NH; Shannon, Phillip and Stephen of Crownsville, MD; Brothers: John and Glenn Rhodes of New Bern, NC; a niece, Gloria Porter and husband Ray, and their son Nicholas of Chapel Hill, NC; a nephew, John L. Rhodes and his wife Tiffany of Austin, TX. He was preceded in death by his first wife Judith Rhodes and a brother Rudolph Rhodes.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, 150 Applecross Rd., Pinehurst, NC 28374.
