David Leon Byrd, Sr., age 87, of Wilmington, formerly of Vass, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024 at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Cox Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory in Vass from 6-8pm.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00am with Pastor Gregg Newton officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashley Heights Baptist Church Cemetery, 10351 Aberdeen Road, Aberdeen, NC with Military Honors.
David was born in Hoke County on May 2, 1936 to the late Otha McKinley and Lucille Shepherd Byrd. He was also preceded in death by his daughters, Jackie Lynn Byrd and Christa Ann Byrd; sisters, Ezelle Garrison, Irene Scott, Nancy Gawrecki and brother Richard Anthony Byrd.
He is survived by his sons, David Leon Byrd, Jr. and Jene Lee Byrd (Amy); grandchildren, Brian Patrick Byrd, Bradley Michael Byrd, Daniel Lee Byrd, Lexi Byrd Grassley; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Sue Whitley and Marie Bryant; significant other, Shirley Joan Gebbia.
