Obituary for Edward J. Stark

Edward (Ted) J. Stark, age 85, died after a brief illness in Pinehurst, NC on Saturday, June 3, 2023.

Ted was born in Exeter, NH in 1938. His father Joseph was a US Army Officer, and after Exeter, the family moved to Atlanta, Tokyo, and Fort Smith, AR. After graduating high school, Ted attended the University of New Hampshire where he pursued an economics major. While at UNH, he was drafted and assigned to the Old Guard, 3rd Infantry Division in Arlington, VA. After completing his service, Ted finished his degree at the University of Maryland.

While pursuing his studies, Ted simultaneously embarked on a lifelong career in banking. During a period of consolidation in the banking industry, he worked for a series of banks, including American Security Bank and Maryland National Bank, where he was Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary. Through continued mergers and acquisitions, Ted would go on to work with NationsBanks and, ultimately, Bank of America where he worked until his retirement in 2005.

In 2018, Ted and his wife Christine left their longtime home in Alexandria, VA for Pinehurst, NC, where they spent the past few years creating a beautiful home and enjoying all that Pinehurst has to offer. In his retirement, Ted served in the Rotary Club of Alexandria and later, the Rotary Club of Pinehurst.

When he wasn’t in the office or boardroom, Ted loved to travel. From his early days with family in Tokyo and Frankfurt, to a lifetime of travel both inside the US and around the world, Ted’s adventurous spirit carried him to all corners of the earth. Closer to home, he loved fishing and gardening.

Whether relaxing at home, traveling, helping those less fortunate than himself, or spending time with his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren, Ted brought curiosity, intellect, and deep insight to all he did. He touched many lives and leaves a powerful legacy.

Ted is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Christine Corcoran Stark; his children, son Tim (wife Bernadette Stark), daughter Amy (wife Reeva Spradlin Stark), and daughter Elizabeth (husband Brian Campbell); step-daughter Elise Schoer (husband Chris Schoer); step-daughter Rhonda Montera Barnhisel; nephew Roy DesArmier; and grandchildren Caden, Carsten, Eren, Christoph, Dominic, Luca, Gudrun, and Imogen.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Becky Stark (d. 2022), his second wife Fran Durbin (d. 2000), brother Jeff Stark, sister Judy DesArmier, and parents Eleanor and Joseph Stark.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 30 at 2pm, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 228 S. Pitt St., Alexandria, VA.
