John T. Thomasson, fondly known as Jack, 77, of Pinehurst, North Carolina and formerly Baltimore, MD., passed peacefully at the FirstHealth Hospice House on Thursday, October 3, 2019.
Jack was born in Baltimore to the late Timothy and Evelyn Smith Thomasson. Jack graduated high school from City College of Baltimore and received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Following graduation, Jack received his commission in the U.S. Army and served as an infantry officer in both Europe and later in Vietnam where he served with distinction. Jack received several honors during combat operations to include the Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Jack returned to the U.S. and during his final tour of duty, he served as an ROTC instructor at Howard University in Washington, DC. Following his honorable discharge, Jack returned home to the Baltimore area and joined the family business at Columbia Rubber, Inc. Throughout his career, Jack led sales and served customers throughout the greater Washington DC and Baltimore metro areas. Jack retired in 2009 as the owner and operator, turning over the business to his son Adam – the third generation of Thomasson’s.
He married Ann “Annie” in 1996. They shared a home in Severna Park and eventually moving to Pinehurst full-time in 2013. An avid reader – Jack accumulated an impressive library full of books that spanned a range from History to Science Fiction. Jack and Annie enjoyed golfing and travelling all around the US and around the world. Jack was a member of the Chartwell Golf & Country Club in Severna Park and a member of the Pinehurst Country Club.
Jack is survived by his wife of 23 years, Annie Thomasson. He was the father of: Jill Suing, Megan Runk, husband Tim, Adam Thomasson, wife Kelly, Julie Horton, husband Neil McGinn and Terry Horton, wife Kristin. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
A celebration of life service will be held on November 9, 2019 at Pinehurst Country Club – Number 9 Smith Room, which is located at 1 Royal Troon Drive, Pinehurst, NC 28374 from 1-4 pm. Program will begin at 2 pm.
