Johnsie Flinchum Harkins, age 82 of Cary passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 14, 2020 in Cary.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 PM.

Johnsie was born in Moore County on September 3, 1937 to the late Brady J. and Myrtle Moore Flinchum.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald Scott, two brothers Charles Eugene Flinchum and Johnnie J. Flinchum, and her sister, Louvene Mathews.

Johnsie was a member of White Plains United Methodist Church while living in Cary, but in her teenage years she was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church where she accepted Christ in her life and taught a young children’s Sunday School class.

She graduated from Carthage High School and worked in Greensboro for several years.  During that time, she would come home on the weekends to attend her home church until she married and moved to Cary.

Johnsie was a humble, loving, caring, devoted mother to her two precious children, Suzanne and Andrew, and later to her four grandchildren Kayla, Kirsten, Larson, and Skyler.  She LOVED spending time with her “grandbabies”; Larson was her “Prince”, and the girls were her “Princesses”. She enjoyed the sleepovers they had at her home, taking them to eat ice cream and feed the ducks at a nearby pond, watching movies, and fixing their favorite foods.

She retired from the Rex Hospital Cancer Center in Raleigh after 19 years of being a medical transcriptionist.  Her fingers typed at lightning speed, which was always a fascination among her children! After retirement, she enjoyed a quiet, peaceful life with family and friends.

Johnsie’s smile could light up a room and her laugh was contagious.  (Jokes were always funnier just by the way she told them!) She loved country music and beach music and was always graceful on the dance-floor as she “two-stepped” or “shagged”. Johnsie was an avid NC State basketball fan, a wonderful Southern cook, and a beautiful writer of stories and poems. She always enjoyed caring for her flowers, and she transformed her yard into a magical wonderland every spring. She dedicated her life to helping friends and family, and she was always the first to arrive whenever anyone was in need.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Harkins Casey and husband Bob of Fuquay Varina; son, Andrew Leon Harkins and wife Linnea of Greeley, Colorado; four precious grandchildren, Larson and Skyler Casey and Kayla and Kirsten Harkins; sister, Phyllis F. Phillips of Bear Creek; brothers, Phil Flinchum of Cary and Dr. Mitchell Flinchum of West Palm Beach, Florida and many special nieces and nephews.
