Valeria Arrington Hardy, age 93, of Carthage, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, after several months of declining health.
A native of Surry County, she was the oldest of 11 children born to the late A.B. and Ludie Law Arrington.
Valeria worked at various jobs during her life, including Pride-Trimble, Pinehurst Surgical Clinic, and Carthage Cooperative Warehouse. She loved working in her vegetable garden, sewing and mending clothes, tending to her beautiful flowers, solving word puzzles, and making wonderful meals and desserts in her kitchen. A child of the Depression era, she was frugal and “green” throughout her life – saving or recycling everything. She loved to clip coupons, shop at thrift stores, and hunt for “bargains.” A woman of deep faith, she always enjoyed reading daily devotions, listening to her weekly church service on CD, and spending time with her church family through visits or phone calls.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend. She loved her family and always enjoyed being with them.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Robert R. Hardy; daughter Anita Hardy Blue; grandson Jonathan Hardy; sisters Gwenda Arrington, Faye Chappel, and Deborah Joyce; brothers Kenneth, Bob, and Donald Arrington.
She is survived by her son Robert Dean Hardy (Gloria) of Jamestown; sisters Frances “Toot” Marion of Rural Hall; Diana “Dena” Lawrence of Pilot Mountain; brothers Rex Arrington of Cana, VA, Ricky Arrington of Mount Airy; grandchildren Rob Hardy (Tiffany) of Fontana Village, Laura Mashburn (Phillip) of Carthage, Amy Brown (Brandon) of Raleigh, Elizabeth Caddell (Wes) of Carthage; five great grandchildren – Noah, Maven, Tad, Max, and Lila Mae – and many loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Summer Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church.
Memorial contributions can be made to Summer Hill Baptist Church, 663 Summer Hill Church Road, Carthage, N.C. 28327.
