Mary “G” Hales Lee, 91, of Pinehurst, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst, surrounded by her family.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Carthage United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Bolyard officiating.

Born in Pitt County she was a daughter of the late Louis Franklin Hales and Mary Grantham Hales. She was raised in Stantonsburg. In 1946 she married the late Robert Edward “Bob” Lee and moved to Moore County. 

Mrs. Lee worked as a bookkeeper for Farmers Tobacco Warehouse for many years and stood beside and supported her husband who served as Moore County School Superintendent through the years of consolidation and integration. She also taught English in Aberdeen for Moore County Schools and later served as a substitute teacher.

She was a Cub Scout leader for several years and was active in her church where she taught Sunday school. She was a member of the church choir for over 50 years and served in various other capacities in the church. 

Mrs. Lee was an avid reader, loved to travel, master at yahtzee and excellent bridge player. 

She was preceded death by her son Robert Owen “Bobby” Lee and is survived by daughters Mary Lou Vaughan and husband Joe of Pinehurst, Carol Anne Lee of Raleigh; sons Charles Andrew “Andy”Lee and wife Laura of Southern Pines, Edward Hales Lee and wife Tamara of Seven Lakes; daughter-in-law Angie Lee of Wilmington; grandchildren Mary Hannah Vaughan and husband Jamie Nesbit, Lee Anne Vaughan, Bailey Vaughan and wife Shirley, Meredith Parker and husband Jacob, Robert Edward Lee, Johnathan Lee, Andrew Lee, Kinsey Lee, Rebekah Lee and Anna Lee; great-grandchildren Maddie Arrington, Landen Yu, Hannah Claire Nesbit, Emerson Vaughan, Lilly Vaughan, Parker Vaughan and Ella Dubay.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Friday, December 8, 2017 at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home.
