HAMLET, N.C. (AP) — A homeowner concerned that someone had tampered with the home’s crawl space helped authorities in North Carolina track down two escaped inmates.
News outlets report the inmates left Morrison Correctional Institution in Hoffman during breakfast Monday.
Authorities say officers were looking for 18-year-old Josh Ashworth and 22-year-old Brandon McDurmon when the homeowner in the town of Hamlet called police. Officers say they found the escaped inmates crammed in the crawl space, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest of the correctional facility.
Officials say Ashworth was expected to be released Aug. 30 and McDurmon was scheduled to be released in May. Both could now be charged with escape and breaking into a second house near where they were caught.
It’s unclear whether either inmate had an attorney.
