A two-vehicle crash sent one person to the hospital, released a small herd of goats, and shut down a busy intersection between Carthage and Eastwood Thursday evening.

The collision occurred around 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of Murdocksville Road and Doubs Chapel Road.

According to authorities on the scene, a Kia SUV traveling south on Murdocksville Road failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a Honda Accord heading east toward U.S. Highway 15-501.

The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway. The Honda Accord spun out, narrowly slid between a power pole and a stop sign, and demolished a cable box before coming to rest against a fence. The Kia crashed through the fence and struck a tree head-on.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, but only the driver of the Honda was injured and was subsequently transported via ambulance for treatment. The two adults and two children in the Kia were not hurt.

The crash also damaged a section of fencing, releasing several goats. The animals were quickly captured and returned.

Southbound Murdocksville Road was closed at the intersection while emergency crews worked the scene and cleared the wreckage.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Responding agencies included the Eastwood Fire Department, Carthage Fire Department (second rescue), Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, Carthage Police Department, and N.C. Highway Patrol.
