A concrete truck carrying 18,000 pounds of concrete overturned into a pond in the Woodlake community early Friday afternoon.

The crash happened in the 600 block of Loblolly Drive inside Woodlake Country Club. Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told Sandhills Sentinel that the driver hit a speed bump, veered to avoid a mailbox, and overcorrected, sending the truck across the road and into the pond.

Highway Patrol said speed is not considered a factor in the crash. The truck’s onboard tracking system showed it was traveling at the posted speed limit at the time of the incident.

The Cypress Pointe Fire Department arrived quickly and was able to bring the driver safely to shore. The driver of the truck was evaluated by EMS but declined transport, reportedly uninjured.

The truck, owned by Speer Concrete, was carrying a full load when it went into the water. Rockwell Towing responded with two trucks and heavy equipment to remove the vehicle from the pond.

Rockwell Towing brought in two heavy-duty trucks to remove the truck from the pond.

Because of the load and fuel involved, a hazmat team from Aberdeen’s Station 41 responded to the scene, along with dive teams to assist in recovery operations. Public Safety units were also on site to support the response.
