A female equestrian was injured when her horse suffered a medical event and collapsed while she was riding Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to Old Mail Road in Southern Pines for what was paged as a traumatic injury. 

Upon arrival, emergency crews found the rider with serious injuries and a medevac helicopter was called.

Reportedly, the horse had suffered a sudden medical event and collapsed with the rider atop, causing possible head and chest injuries to the rider. The horse was deceased at the scene.

EMS transported the victim to the Southern Pines ballfield on Morganton Road where Tarheel 3 from UNC Hospitals airlifted the victim to a trauma center.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.
