Superintendent announces retirement

The Moore County Board of Education voted Monday to extend Superintendent Dr. Bob Grimesey’s contract for an additional year. His current contract does not expire until 2022.

The vote was unanimous from the board members in spite of opposition from over ten speakers who spoke out during the public comment period.

The concerns expressed by the public included low school performance grades with several speakers pointing out that four Moore County Schools are receiving a D on the current school assessment, the ACT issue at Pinecrest High School, cost overruns, and questions about the bid process on the new Southern Pines School Elementary School.

The school board stated that Dr. Grimesey has met or exceeded the standards established by the board.

Grimesey began as superintendent in July 2014. Prior to assuming this position, he served as Superintendent of Orange County Public Schools in Virginia from 2009 to 2014, and Alleghany County Public Schools in Pennsylvania from 2001 to 2009.
