A multi-vehicle crash in Aberdeen resulted in significant injuries and a temporary shutdown of the roadway on Tuesday night. Authorities estimate between six and eight individuals were injured, including multiple juveniles, though exact numbers are pending confirmation.
The crash happened on U.S. 15-501 near its intersection with Hight Road, south of Burney Hardware.Â
According to authorities, the wrecks occurred when a Ford SUV exited a driveway onto southbound U.S. 15-501, pulling out in front of a southbound minivan. In an attempt to avoid a rear-end collision, the minivan swerved across the centerline, colliding head-on with a northbound BMW. The impact forced the BMW off of the road, where it landed on its side in a ditch.
The minivan, driven by a mother with small children on board, sustained significant front-end damage. All occupants of the minivan were transported to the hospital for evaluation. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol told Sandhills Sentinel that this was upwards of six individuals, possibly eight.Â
The driver of the Ford SUV, identified as the individual responsible for causing the crash, was airlifted to a trauma center. Troopers confirmed she will face citations related to the incident.
Both directions of U.S. 15-501 were closed for an extended period, causing significant traffic delays in both directions as emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Rockwell Towing assisted in removing the vehicles and clearing the roadway.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
