Shots fired at alleged trespasser result in two arrests

On Monday, July 22, at around 8:10 a.m., Moore County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an alleged trespasser being held at gunpoint at an uninhabited residence in Robbins. The incident involved Thomas Hayes, 41, of Liberty, North Carolina, and Jeremy Brewer, 48, of Robbins, North Carolina.

According to a press release from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, investigators determined that Hayes had received a notification from a camera system installed on the property the night before about a vehicle at the residence. On the morning of July 22, Hayes and a third party went to the residence armed, where they observed a vehicle leaving the property.

Hayes allegedly fired numerous rifle rounds into the vehicle, striking three of the four tires, as well as the front and rear of the vehicle. Investigators believe more than 15 shots were fired. Law enforcement was not notified of the suspicious vehicle prior to the shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies reportedly found Hayes holding Brewer at gunpoint. Brewer was identified as the driver of the vehicle and was found to have stolen miscellaneous items from the property. Brewer was charged with one count of felony breaking and entering, felony larceny, and felony possession of stolen goods. He was committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond, pending his first court appearance in Moore County District Court on August 1, 2024.

Hayes was charged with one count of discharging a weapon into occupied property and was released on a written promise to appear in Moore County District Court on August 1. There were no injuries resulting from the shooting.
