SP Parks & Rec welcomes new director

The Town of Southern Pines has welcomed Greg Thompson as its new director of Parks and Recreation. Thompson is a native of Moore County and has fond memories of enjoying the area’s parks and resources as a child.

Greg most recently served as the Parks Management Coordinator for the City of Roanoke, Virginia, where he was responsible for the maintenance, preservation, and construction of facilities and parks. His previous experience in Roanoke included running the athletics programs there. He previously held positions in Raleigh as historic attractions operations manager and as youth and camp manager. His first job was as a local camp counselor.

“My family and I are excited to start a new chapter in Southern Pines,” he noted recently. “My whole family is in Moore County, and my wife’s family is in Raleigh. I have always cherished my memories of growing up here, and we are looking forward to having the same experiences I had.” He says he is looking most forward to building upon the excellent reputation of our facilities and offerings from pre-school to senior activities.

Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University and is a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP).

“Greg is a great addition to our leadership team,” says assistant town manager Jessica Roth. “His experience and energy are a natural fit for our exceptional Parks & Recreation team. He loves Moore County as much as we do and has deep roots here.”

Thompson’s office is located at Campbell House, 482 E. Connecticut Avenue in Southern Pines. Greg can be reached at 910-692-2463.
