The Town of Southern Pines is reminding residents that Martin Dog Park and all trails and greenways, except those at Whitehall, remain closed until further notice. The Town’s parks and grounds team actively assessed damage last week following Tropical Storm Chantal and is prioritizing repairs.
While the trails are no longer flooded, many remain unsafe due to washed-out sections, damaged bridges, deep ruts, and other hazards. The conditions not only increase the risk of injury, but also make it difficult for first responders to access in the event of an emergency.
Director of Parks and Recreation, Greg Thompson said, “The safety of our patrons is always going to be top priority. Our Parks and Grounds team has been working diligently on repairs, so we can get the system back open to the public. We are asking everyone to help by staying off the trails while these repairs are underway and to be patient as we work to restore safe, accessible pathways as quickly as possible.”
Heavy equipment will be utilized in these areas by town staff and contractors assisting with repairs. For the safety of crews and citizens, please avoid using the trails during this time.
Trail status updates will be shared on the Town of Southern Pines and Southern Pines Parks and Recreation Facebook pages, and at sopinesnc.info/Chantal. Additional questions can be directed to Thompson at [email protected].
The Town of Aberdeen also announced that Aberdeen Lake Park remains closed due to the damage caused by Chantal.
