Sports wrap-up: Holiday basketball tournaments begin

As students are released for winter break, basketball student-athletes head to holiday tournaments for the next two weeks.

Father Vincent Capodanno High School (Vass):

Men’s Basketball 0-6:

The Grunts are in their first basketball season in school history. They have not yet entered into a conference and are playing a shorter season in the first year of their program.

Tuesday, the Grunts hosted 5-6 Village Christian Academy and were defeated 29-77.

The men’s basketball team will return to the court on Jan. 6, 2022 at North Moore. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

Women’s Basketball 1-3:

Will return Jan. 5, 2022 at St. Thomas Academy (9-0). Tipp-off is at 5 p.m.

North Moore High School (Robbins):

Men’s Basketball 4-4 (0-1) Conference:

On Monday, the Mustang traveled to South Davidson for a 56-49 victory.  Thursday, the Mustangs stayed in county and traveled to Southern Pines to take on O’Neal. The Mustangs lost the match up 74-48.

The Mustangs will continue their season at home against conference rival Bartlett-Yancey (1-7). Tip-off will be 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball 1-5 (0-1):

On Monday, the Lady Mustangs took a big loss at South Davidson 72-21.  Thursday, the Lady Mustangs also traveled to O’Neal. The Mustangs had another bad night losing 64-16.

The Lady Mustangs will return Jan. 4, 2022 at 6 p.m. against conference rival Bartlett-Yancey (2-5).

O’Neal (Southern Pines):

Swimming:

The Men and Women’s swim teams are 4-0 on the season. On Tuesday, they defeated St. David’s and Cape Fear Academy. The women’s team won in every event.

The Falcons had multiple new state qualifiers.

Jordan Redd qualified in the 50.

Chloe Abner, Morgan Lewis and Michaela Stone in the 50-meter freestyle.

Lorin Hobbs in the 100-meter fly.

Vicki York in the 100-meter backstroke.

Stand-out swim of the meet came from Ava Taylor Walker in the 500-meter freestyle.

New state qualifiers for the men were:

Henry Riebe 200-meter freestyle.

Alex Grimshaw 100-meter fly.

Radford Walker 100-meter freestyle.

Charlie Kuzma 100-meter freestyle.

Nathan Brianas in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Stand-out swim of the meet on the men’s side came from Charlie Kuzma in the 100-meter freestyle, and Nathan Brianas in the 100-meter breaststroke.

The swim teams will return to the pool Jan. 10, 2022.

Men’s Basketball 6-3 (1-0) Conference:

Thursday in O’Neal’s annual Silent Night, the Falcons defeated North Moore 74-48.

The Falcons will play in the St. David’s Big Holiday Invitational beginning Monday.

Women’s Basketball 8-2 (1-0) Conference:

In Silent Night on Thursday, the Lady Falcons defeated North Moore 64-16

The Lady Falcons will play in the St. David’s Big Holiday Invitational beginning Monday.

Pinecrest High School (Southern Pines):

Pinecrest Wrestling:

Patriot Wrestling has not been able to practice or compete since Dec. 6. Saturday, they were able to hold their first practice and will return to the mat after the holiday break

Men’s Basketball 4-2 (0-1) Conference:

Tuesday, the Patriots hosted Millbrook and was able to seal the victory 74-67.

The Patriots competed in the Dexter Cooley Showcase on Saturday defeating Bunn 72-30.

The Patriots host the Holiday in the Pines Tournament. They will face 6-1 Hoggard Wednesday at 7 p.m. On Thursday, the Patriots will take on 4-5 Cardinal Gibbons at 1 p.m.

Woman’s Basketball 4-3 (0-1) Conference:

Tuesday, the Lady Patriots traveled to Millbrook losing 47-61.

The Patriots will be back on the court Dec. 27, at 1:30 p.m. against Wesleyan Christian Academy (6-1)  tournament play.

Union Pines High School (Carthage):

Union Pines Wrestling:

The Vikings traveled to Douglas Byrd on Saturday and won all five duals.

UP 72 Chapel Hill 6

UP 66 Douglas Byrd 18

UP 72 EE Smith 9

The Vikings are 2-0 in the conference and 19-3 overall.

Men’s Basketball 8-0 (1-0) Conference:

The Vikings remained undefeated last week after traveling to Montgomery Central. The Vikings left with their eighth win of the season after a 45-32 victory.

The men will compete in the Lee County Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27. They will play Green Level (6-2) at 2 p.m.

Women’s Basketball 7-4 (1-0) Conference:

On Tuesday, the Lady Vikings took home a 48-35 victory against Montgomery Central.

On Thursday, they competed in the CCS Holiday Tournament.

Thursday, they lost 58-46 against Seventy-First.

Friday, they lost 53-45 against South View.

Saturday, they defeated Jack Britt 47-26.

They will return Jan. 4, 2022 at 6 p.m. for a conference match-up at Scotland (8-2).

Wrestling:

The Vikings will compete in The Tiger Holiday Classic on Tuesday morning with 13 wrestlers.  There will be approximately 35 teams in this competition.

Sandhills Community College 10-4:

The Flyers continued their win streak this past week. On Wednesday, the Flyers defeated S4G 108-78. Saturday, the Flyers defeated Thomas Nelson CC 90-71.

The flyers will return New Year’s Day at 3 p.m. against Davidson-Dowie CC.
