SPPD investigates after person shot twice

The Southern Pines Police Department is investigating a Saturday shooting that left a person with two gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred after 4 p.m. on N. Stephens Street.

Police tape cordoned off a backyard in the 100 block of N. Stephens Street.

According to an official on scene, one person was transported to the hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition after sustaining two gunshot wounds to the leg. The person was released from the hospital the same day.

“This was not a random act of violence, and there is no known on-going threat to the community,” said Deputy Police Chief Robert Heaton to Sandhills Sentinel. “Our investigations division continues to work diligently and would request that anyone with information call the Southern Pines Police Department at 910-692-7031. Tips can be made anonymously.”

On Tuesday, Heaton updated Sandhills Sentinel on the case.

“A juvenile suspect was taken into custody this morning for the shooting incident and is being transported to a juvenile detention facility to be held in secure custody pending further judicial proceedings,” said Heaton.
