Obituary for Gary Conroy Volk of Carthage

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Conroy Volk, better known as “Grampy” to his loved ones, 86, of Carthage, NC. He found eternal peace on June 26, 2026, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 28, 1939, in West Falls, NY, he was the son of Arthur W. and Grace C. Volk of West Falls, NY.

Gary attended East Aurora Highschool and shortly after started a lifelong career in the Masonry profession. He was a master brick mason by trade, leaving behind a permanent legacy. His craftsmanship is evident throughout the local community and Fort Bragg, where visitors and residents alike can see many structures that he helped build from the ground up. He was also a recognized disabled Veteran who proudly served his Country.

He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Danene Volk. Gary and Danene’s love story began when they first met as teenagers at the local Erie County Fair in New York – one with a passion for showing livestock and the other showing horses. That chance encounter at the local fair blossomed into a 60-year marriage. During their marriage, they were blessed with three sons: Gary Ross (Lisa) Volk, Greg Volk, and Geoff (Sharon) Volk; and five grandchildren: Megan (Daniel) Byrd, Caleb (Devin) Volk, Jeremy Volk, Cody Volk, and Logan Volk; as well as five great-grandchildren: Gavin and Harper Byrd, Drake and Reed Volk, and Tucker Volk. The legacy continues with another great-grandson expected in October.

In addition to his parents, Arthur and Grace Volk, he was preceded in death by his sister, Irene Bush and brother, Edward Volk.

Beyond his career and military service, he loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing but was just as content relaxing inside with a cold beer, watching football or NASCAR. Above all else, Grampy loved his family. He was a constant and steady presence in everyone’s lives. He was always available to lend a helping hand no matter the time or place, even up until the onset of his illness. He could also be counted on to attend every family gathering and milestone celebration. While he will not be in his usual seat at our next family get-together, nor available to lend a helping hand, the memories we made with him will always be cherished.

Only a few days before his passing, he gave us comfort by saying “Its time to ride on”. He was ready to leave this world behind and go to heaven leaving us with peace knowing that he is now on his final, eternal journey.

Honoring Grampy’s wishes, a traditional service will not be held at this time. Instead, a joyful Celebration of Life will be arranged at a later date.

We love you, Grampy. You will always be in our hearts.
