Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care was selected as a recipient of a 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant.
Through this award, the Coalition will create and distribute 600 Senior Disaster Preparedness Kits to older adults across Moore County. The kits will provide practical resources and information to help seniors prepare for emergencies, severe weather, and unexpected disruptions.
The project is part of AARP’s nationwide Community Challenge program, which supports local efforts that make communities more livable for people of all ages.
“Emergency preparedness kits will be distributed to about 600 residents aged 50-plus,” said AARP. “The kits will help older adults prepare for hurricanes, power outages and extreme heat, especially in rural and low-income areas.”
“Helping our neighbors means being there before a crisis, not just during one,” said Stephen Phillips, executive director of Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care, in a news release. “These kits will provide practical preparedness resources that help Moore County seniors stay safe, informed, and prepared when emergencies occur.”

For 40 years, Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care has served Moore County residents through food assistance, financial assistance, clothing programs, and other support services.
