SPPD investigating second shooting in 10 days

A shooting occurred in Southern Pines Wednesday evening. This was the second shooting in 10 days that Sandhills Sentinel has reported, only blocks from where the first one occurred.

A man in his 30s was shot on Coats Street around 7 p.m. He reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the back. Emergency crews called for a helicopter, and he was transported to the Memorial Park in Southern Pines. He was airlifted to a trauma center in serious condition.

As fire trucks arrived at the ball field to set up a landing zone, a Little League baseball team was on the field practicing. Fire crews and the coach helped move the boys out of the area to allow the helicopter to land.

Southern Pines Police Deputy Chief Charles Campbell could only confirm that the shooting occurred and that no one was in custody.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
