Pinecrest student passes away after T-bone crash

Emergency units were dispatched to a T-bone collision in Southern Pines on Central Drive at the intersection with Fairway Drive around 10 p.m. Thursday.

According to officials on the scene, a Volkswagen Jetta traveling on Fairway Drive failed to stop at a stop sign and crossed into the path of a Chevrolet Malibu traveling on Central Drive toward the Moore County Airport.

The Jetta went through the intersection and was hit on the driver’s side. The impact pushed the car off the road and into a small group of trees.

Firefighters had to pry open both driver’s side doors to remove the occupants from the Jetta. All three were transported to Moore Regional Hospital as air care was unavailable due to weather conditions. Pinecrest High School student Brycen Mabe was on life support following the wreck. He passed several days later.

A GoFundMe page has been created.

“Brycen came bouncing into this world 17 years ago,” said the fundraiser page. “He has always been a very rambunctious and loving child. His nickname as a toddler quickly became “Bam-Bam” off the Flintstones. As he grew, everyone always said he was going to be a football player. As it turned out, he was extremely athletic and an extremely well versed Defensive player.”
