Union Pines High School is celebrating a Career and Technical Education milestone as student Connor Donathan becomes the school’s first student selected for a construction pre-apprenticeship opportunity with Habitat for Humanity.
The opportunity, recognized on Oct. 22, will allow Connor to gain hands-on experience in the construction industry while building skills and exploring a potential career pathway.
Moore County Schools, Sandhills Community College, and Habitat for Humanity developed the pre-apprenticeship through a partnership. Nichole Jaffee, Union Pines High School Career Development Coordinator; Tannelaine Wilson, Moore County Schools Work-Based Learning Coordinator; Jason Levister, Sandhills Community College Director of Workplace Learning; and Keith Matz, Habitat for Humanity Project Manager, worked together to connect Connor with the opportunity.
After meeting the program requirements, Connor was selected to participate in the pre-apprenticeship, giving him the chance to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting and gain firsthand experience in construction.
The opportunity reflects the continued focus of Union Pines High School and Moore County Schools Career and Technical Education on expanding work-based learning experiences for students. Partnerships with local employers and workforce development organizations help students explore career options, develop workplace skills and prepare for employment, apprenticeships and further education after graduation.
As the first pre-apprenticeship placement of its kind at Union Pines, the opportunity also helps establish a pathway for future students to connect their interests and skills with local workforce opportunities.
“Moore County Schools congratulates Connor on this achievement and thanks Sandhills Community College, Habitat for Humanity and the staff members whose collaboration helped make the opportunity possible,” said the school district in a news release.
