Moore County Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a shooting after being dispatched to a domestic call.
Sheriff’s deputies Sergeant Tracy Carter and Deputy David Ring responded to a domestic dispute at 176 White Oak Street in Carthage at approximately 7:02 p.m. on Friday June 23, 2017.
During the call, Donald Ray Johnson, a 74 year old male, removed a pistol from his pocket and aimed it at the deputies. One deputy shot Johnson in the left thigh. Both deputies then began rendering first aid on Johnson until EMS arrived.
The SBI was contacted by Sheriff Neil Godfrey and investigated the incident. Both deputies will remain on paid administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
Johnson was treated, and released by UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital.
On June 24, 2017, Moore County deputies arrested Johnson, of 176 White Oak Street, Carthage, North Carolina. Johnson was charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm. Johnson was placed in the Moore County Detention Center under a $150,000.00 secured bond and given a July 11, 2017 District Court date.
It is standard practice for the SBI to investigate officer-involved shootings. The SBI will provide the District Attorney, Maureen Krueger, the results of their investigation which may take several weeks to complete.
