After nearly 75 years, a Moore County resident finally received her late brother’s military medals. U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson presented Pfc. Raymond Vick’s lost Victory Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Pin to Jean Brady Monday at a ceremony at the American Legion Post No. 12 in Carthage.
Vick enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served with General Patton’s 3rd Army. He was only 19 years old when he was killed in World War II in Germany in 1945.
Brady was 8 years old when her brother was killed. His last letter home was written three days before his death and was postmarked the day he was killed.
After sharing her story about missing her brother’s medals with Hudson’s staff at the Moore County GOP’s annual Ronald Reagon Dinner in Pinehurst, Brady received a call from Hudson’s office sharing the news they had located Vick’s medals for distinguished service.
“When they called and told me that they had his medals, I was thrilled,” said Brady, who lives in West End.
After jumping through bureaucratic hoops to located the medal, Hudson was honored to present them to Brady.
“It was an honor to be able to get these medals for the family,” said Hudson. “It is important that we honor our World War II Veterans as we are losing them daily. It is important that we preserve their memory for the next generation.”
Hudson added, “I am proud to represent Fort Bragg and Moore County, and if any other families are missing service medals, please contact my office. It is one of the services that I am proud to offer military families.” You can reach his local office at (910) 997-2070.
Additionally, the American Legion presented a plaque honoring Vick.
