Worker trapped in lift 30 feet in air after striking power lines

A worker using a hydraulic lift at Reliance Packaging in Aberdeen on Anderson Street became trapped approximately 30 feet in the air after the platform struck high-voltage power lines Thursday evening.

The collision with the lines caused two large transformers to blow, with the loud explosions heard from several blocks away. The lift became entangled with the power lines, emitting smoke as emergency crews arrived. The worker remained conscious and was able to communicate with rescuers during the ordeal.

A ladder truck from Southern Pines Fire & Rescue responded, but rescue efforts were delayed until Duke Energy could shut off power to the affected lines. Duke Energy crews initially estimated a 20-minute response time and promptly deactivated the power upon arrival.

Rescue personnel used a large bucket truck to reach the worker. The man was safely transferred to the bucket and was lowered to the ground, where paramedics assessed him. He declined further medical treatment.

The incident caused a widespread power outage across Aberdeen, extending into downtown areas as darkness fell. Traffic lights at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Highway 5 were out, prompting Aberdeen Police and Fire to direct traffic manually.

Responding units included Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Aberdeen Police Department.
