Chantal causes flooding, water rescues, damage to homes in the Sandhills

Tropical Storm Chantal blew through Moore County on Sunday, bringing torrential rain, flash flooding, and widespread damage to homes and property.

Shortly after the rain began, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the area. Although no tornadoes were confirmed, the storm brought relentless downpours that quickly flooded roads and low-lying areas.

Emergency crews conducted multiple water rescues throughout the afternoon as vehicles were stranded by rising waters. One such rescue took place on Midland Road in Southern Pines, where a swiftwater team used a boat to reach a driver trapped between the overpass and the traffic circle.

Floodwaters forced the closure of several roads across the county. In one area near Brucewood Road and U.S. 15-501, flood waters of up to several feet were reported. At least one vehicle became disabled in the high water.

In Aberdeen, a large tree fell across a home, though no injuries were reported. Several ground-floor apartments on Richards Street took on water, and firefighters were called in to assist residents.

Officials are urging drivers to use extreme caution when traveling, especially after dark when flooded roadways may be difficult to see.
