Arrest made in an Aberdeen shooting that left man in critical condition

An arrest has been made in an Aberdeen shooting that left one man airlifted in critical condition on Aug. 5. 

Raheem Mahad Ewing, 43, of West End, was arrested several days later and is facing assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. 

Officers with the Aberdeen Police Department were dispatched at 8:16 p.m. to the Woodlawn Apartments on Magnolia Drive after receiving reports of shots fired. 

While officers were en route, dispatchers received another call reporting that a person was lying on the ground and screaming for help.

When officers arrived, they reportedly found a 39-year-old Pinebluff man suffering from two gunshot wounds, one to the chest and one to the shoulder. The victim was flown to an area trauma center in critical condition after first responders administered life-saving measures.

Police told Sandhills Sentinel on scene that they identified a suspect of interest and were conducting a search of the area Wednesday night with the assistance of K-9 units. 

Investigators actively followed leads in an attempt to locate him over the following days. On Aug. 10, Ewing was located and apprehended by the Moore County Special Response Team and Aberdeen Special Response Team, following a foot pursuit while executing a search warrant at a home in the area of Hazelwood Drive and Pinebluff Lake Road, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.

Investigators obtained additional warrants on Ewing for felony possession of cocaine, felony possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor resisting, delaying, and obstructing.

Ewing was arrested and taken before a Moore County Magistrate, where he received no bond.

“The Aberdeen Police Department would like to thank the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Southern Pines Police Department, NC SBI and ATF for their assistance,” said Aberdeen Police in a news release on Aug. 11. 

The department said the shooting appeared to have been an isolated incident.
