SUV impaled by guardrail in crash during storm

Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue responded to a car crash on U.S. Highway 1 amid heavy rain, where a guardrail impaled an SUV.

On social media, the fire department said the single-vehicle crash closed one northbound lane of the highway near Aiken Road on Sunday at 7 p.m.

The driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV lost control, went off the road, and crashed into the guardrail on the side of the highway.

The guardrail penetrated the vehicle near the driver’s-side tire, then passed between the driver’s seat and door. The vehicle’s front end was heavily damaged, and the airbags deployed.

Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue did not provide information on what caused the crash or whether anyone was hurt. The storm’s wet roads may have contributed to the crash just outside Vass.
