Five Hundred and six pounds of unused prescription pills and medicine was collected in Moore County in a six month period as part of the National Pill Take Back Initiative.

Since the last campaign in October of last year, 379,500 dosage units of expired or unused medication was collected for safe disposal Saturday at the Seven Lakes Fire & Rescue, announced Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields.

The initiative is a program that reduces the rate of accidental poisonings, overdoses, abuse, and misuse of these substances.

Fields is reminding the public of the five permanent Moore County prescription pill drop boxes that are available throughout the year.

The permanent drop boxes are located at the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and Aberdeen Police Department from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Whispering Pines Police Department has a permanent drop box available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Pinehurst Police Department has a permanent drop box available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

The newest drop box location is at the Prescription Shoppe in Seven Lakes and is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
