A landmark in downtown Vass will be closing its doors after 58 years. BB&T customers have until November 16 to bank at this location.
In today’s world, more and more people are choosing to conduct their banking business digitally, and BB&T recognizes the fact.
However, according to BB&T’s Vice President Corporate Communications, branches are still an important part of BB&T’s business model, and “we’re constantly evaluating all of our locations in terms of client-use patterns and convenience within the markets we serve.”
After November 16, residents in Vass and surrounding communities will have to bank online, change banks, or start banking at the Southern Pines BB&T.
“After much consideration, we’ve decided to close the branch at 100 Bank Street in Vass,” said Vice President Corporate Communications, David White. “We’re ready to serve those clients at the branch at 200 SW Broad Street, which is about a 15-minute drive and are encouraging them to visit us there,”
The bank in Vass has been in business since 1960 according to the town clerk, and some community members are trying to keep the bank from closing.
Angela Vacek has started an online petition. Vacek is trying to get 1,000 signatures before sending it to the corporate office in Winston Salem. Currently, she is half way there.
“BB&T is a critical and vital part of our community. Our BB&T bank services Vass and all other surrounding towns and communities,” said Vacek in the petition.
The closing of the branch was discussed last week at the Vass Town Hall Meeting.
Vacek said the town commissioners are drafting a letter asking the corporate office to reconsider closing the bank.
“However, this one letter may not be enough for BB&T corporate offices to reconsider. By starting this petition, we, members of this community, can show our want and need for our BB&T bank to stay open in our town,” said Vacek.
Vacek recognizes the convenience of digital banking, but said there are many community members, businesses, and local organizations that bank with BB&T because they are like trusted family who help us make financial decisions such as home ownership, purchasing a car, qualifying for a loan, or retirement planning. “They are who we turn to for sound financial guidance and advice,” said Vacek.
BB&T is not expecting any layoffs as a result of the Vass branch closing.
“Most of our branch associates will move to the receiving financial center to serve those same clients,” said White.
Vacek said, “This bank is in the heart of our town and is a part of the heart of our community, so please sign our petition.”
