The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles license plate agency in Aberdeen will close its doors at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, as longtime owner and operator Dawn Burrows-Barber retires after more than four decades at the location.
A new contractor has since been selected and is expected to reopen the office within one to three months.
The agency has operated at 1313 N. Sandhills Blvd. since 1984, when Burrows-Barber began operating the location. NCDMV oversees license plate agencies statewide, while private contractors or local governments operate individual offices.
The NCDMV began seeking a new contractor for the Aberdeen location earlier this year.
The agency will not reopen at its current location; rather, the NCDMV has stated that the new contractor will operate from a new location.
License plate agencies handle a variety of vehicle-related transactions, including registrations, titles, plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. Note that the separate NCDMV Driver License Office (handling driver’s licenses and REAL IDs at 521 S. Sandhills Blvd. in Aberdeen) remains open.
While the Aberdeen office is closed, customers will need to use other nearby license plate agencies or use online services at NCDMV.gov.
