On May 18, the Aberdeen Police Department successfully located a missing juvenile with the assistance of drone technology. Officers were dispatched to the area of Pine Street after receiving a report of a runaway juvenile.
Responding officers included a FAA-licensed drone pilot on duty. The officer immediately initiated a search, deploying the department’s DJI Mavic drone to assist by doing an aerial search of the area.
Using thermal imaging capabilities, the drone detected motion along the nearby railroad tracks. The operator was able to guide ground units to the area, allowing officers to safely apprehend the juvenile without incident.
The juvenile was located safely and returned to their residence.
“This incident highlights the effectiveness of drone technology in assisting officers during time-sensitive situations,” said Aberdeen Chief of Police Brian Chavis in a news advisory. “The investment in advanced tools like UAVs directly enhances the ability to protect and serve the community. The Aberdeen Police Department remains committed to incorporating innovative technology to enhance public safety and ensure rapid response in critical incidents.”
