OutreachNC announced its annual Assignment ONC: Interview a Veteran contest. The tradition continues that honors and celebrates the contributions of our veterans. The 2019 contest was a certified hit.
The contest is designed to both honor the contributions of the veterans in our community and to highlight the student writer’s interviewing and storytelling skills. This year’s prize will be awarded to a student between the ages of 12 and 18 years old.
Students are asked to interview a veteran about the lessons learned during his or her military service. The interviews should be submitted in interview format including the questions posed and the answers given. Interviews should also include a brief description of how the interviewer knows the veteran and provide a brief background of the veteran’s service.
Students will conduct the interviews themselves, from start to finish. Each interviewer will choose his or her list of questions, reach out to veterans for interviews, and write their interview essay including a brief introduction and the interview itself. The winning essay may be edited for length when published in OutreachNC.
OutreachNC is excited to hear which questions students will ask and how veterans will respond. We all have different lenses through which we view life, and these interviews will help them view Veteran’s Day through the perspectives of multiple generations.
The maximum word count for each interview is 1,000 words, including the introduction and interview itself.
A $100 gift card prize will be awarded to the winner, and the winning interview-formatted essay will be published in the November 2020 issue of OutreachNC.
September 1, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. is the deadline for submissions. Submissions should be sent via email to Amy Phariss, Editor in Chief, OutreachNC, [email protected].
